Poetry Contest: June 14, 2008: St. Louis Writers Guild announces the 2008 DEANE WAGNER-POETRY CONTEST, a decades-old poetry contest distinguished for its past winners and judges. The contest is open for submissions from April 15 through June 14, 2008. $10 for first poem, $5 for each additional up to three. In addition to award certificates, website publication, and a public reading opportunity (in St. Louis in July). Prizes are $200 for first place, $150 for second place, and $100 for third place. Workshop for Kids: June 28, 2008: St. Louis Writers Guild and Chesterfield,Arts.are co-sponsoring HAVE FUN-WRITE YOUR STORY, _a workshop for kids who will be in grades 4-8 next fall _and are interested in entering The Big Write youth writing contest. The same, workshop will be offered at two different times at the Chesterfield Arts facility in Chesterfield, MO on Saturday, June 28: from 1 until 2:30 PM, and from 3 until 4:30 PM. Workshop: Saturday, July 12, 2008: St. Louis Writers Guild announces a SPECIAL ALL-DAY FICTION INTENSIVE WORKSHOP: "Writing Effective Dialogue and Electric Narrative" - presented by Arizona author and poet, HARVEY STANBROUQH whose work has been nominated for a National. Book Award, a Pulitzer Prize, a Pushcart Prize, a Frankfurt Book Fair Award, and the Inscriptions Magazing Engraver's Award. This event is co-sponsored by SLWG & CHESTERFIELD ARTS. Young Writers Contest: September 12, 2008: St. Louis Writers Guild and Build-A-Bear Workshops Foundation have teamed up again to sponsor THE BIG WRITE, a youth writing contest for kids who will be in grades'4-8 next fall. The contest is hosted for The Big Read festival, which will take place, October 11. Students are invited to write a 250-500 word story that begins with the sentence, "It all started when someone. left the window open" (taken from The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg). Prizes are $100 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place, along with Build-A-Bear merchandise, an awards certificate, and the opportunity to read the winning entries before a live audience at The Big Read' festival. Columbia Chapter Writers' Guild - meets the first Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m. at Orr Street Studios in Columbia. Monthly meetings vary between speakers sharing their expertise and writers critiquing one anothers' work. St. Joseph Writers' Guild (MWG) - meets the 3rd Saturday each

St. Louis Writers Guild is open to writers of all genres and experience levels. The organization was established in 1920 and has over 350 members. SLWG holds 3-4 regular events every month: a two-hour workshop at Barnes & Noble-Crestwood on the first Saturday (free to members; $5 non-member fee is fully credited toward dues within 30 days), a free two-hour Open Mic Night on the second Tuesday at Wired Coffee in Sunset Hills, a free two-hour Open Mic Night at The Mack (for 18 and older) on the third Tuesday, and a free one-hour Lecture series every other month that takes place at Barnes Noble-Ladue on the third Thursday. Workshops and lectures feature prominent authors or publishing experts. Contests and special events are announced frequently.
