Nov. 1-4, 2007 – Sisters in Crime announces its first Forensic University of St. Louis: 50 Ways to Catch a Killer. at the Hilton St. Louis Airport (St. Louis, Missouri). Headliners are Jan Burke, Dr. D. P.Lyle, Eileen Dreyer, and Detective Lee Lofland (retired). Planned topics include an overview of forensic science and police procedure; how to make forensic science work in your book; crime scene basics; overview of crime labs; death investigation basics; autopsies; psychology of crime; poisons and their detection; understanding DNA evidence; fingerprints; firearms evidence; the role of photograph and videography in forensic work; interpretation of blood spatter; trace evidence; forgery; the role of jurisdiction in forensic procedures entomology; science and the courtroom; the role of canine units; and using warrants and searches. Columbia Chapter Main Group (MWG) - meets the first Sunday each month, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Daniel Boone Regional Library in Columbia.
Columbia Chapter Writers' Guild - meets the first Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m. at Orr Street Studios in Columbia. Monthly meetings vary between speakers sharing their expertise and writers critiquing one anothers' work. St. Louis Writers Guild is open to writers of all genres and experience levels. The organization was established in 1920 and has over 200 members. They hold three regular events every month: a two-hour workshop at Barnes & Noble-Crestwood on the first Saturday (free to members; $5 non-member fee is fully credited toward dues within 30 days), a free two-hour Open Mic Night (locations vary) on the second Tuesday, and a free one-hour Lecture series that takes place at Barnes & Noble-Ladue every third Thursday. Workshops and lectures feature prominent authors or publishing experts. Contests and special events are announced frequently. Online forums provide networking opportunities between meetings and other helpful resources for writers.
